The Working Week 25: Professor Geoff Moore

This week, Wayne is joined by Geoff Moore, Professor of Business Ethics at Durham Business School in the UK, for a wide-ranging discussion about business sustainability, social responsibility and the role business schools are playing in these issues.

Geoff’s research and scholarly activity is mostly in the areas of corporate social responsibility and business ethics with contributions in the areas of corporate philanthropy, corporate social disclosure, stakeholder theory and corporate social versus financial performance – in other words, the business case for CSR.

Geoff sits on the Editorial Boards of the “Journal of Business Ethics”, and “Business Ethics: A European Review”. He is a founding member of the UK Association of European Business Ethics Network (EBEN-UK) and was Chair from 2002 to 2004. As well as a being a member of the European Business Ethics Network, Geoff is also a member of the Society for Business Ethics (USA).

In their discussion, Wayne and Geoff explore whether businesses should create value only for their shareholders, or whether other stakeholders – customers, suppliers and employees – are just as important.

Geoff argues that many businesses are moving away from the “pure shareholder” model towards a more stakeholder-oriented one, and explains what steps the business education world is taking to mirror this trend.
