The Working Week 5: Dan Bobinski

This week, Wayne chews the cud with Dan Bobinski, CEO and director of the Center for Workplace Excellence and Management-Issues’ longest-serving columnist. Wayne and Dan discuss leadership and what it takes for a leader to stay fresh and inspiring, as well as offering some thoughts on vacations and how to escape the office “e-leash”.

 47 seconds - Wayne picks up a couple of blogs that have caught his attention by resident blogger - Derek Torres. One looks at the transfer of power and the impact on work with the UK handover of power from Tony Blair to Gordon Brown. The second looks at the Australian budget debate and ask if the Government understands small business.

1 minute 53 seconds - Wayne introduces Dan Bobinksi, CEO and director of the Center for Workplace Excellence and Management-Issues’ longest-serving columnist.

2 minutes and 20 seconds - Dan wants to talk about an article out this week by UK management thought leader Robert Heller.

2 minutes and 50 seconds - Dan likes the Robert’s focus on the fact that leaders tend to have a natural leadership span and discusses the challenges of getting trapped in a success pattern.

3 minutes and 40 seconds - According to Robert it is the ability of a leader to change with the times that is crucial.

5 minutes - The concept of renewable leadership is debated. How important is it for leaders to be open and receptive to feedback?

5 minutes - Dan focuses on the concept of unintentional ignorance - the CEO just does not realise what he is doing - he has just fallen into a pattern….

6 minutes and 45 seconds - Wayne asks if people are actually aware of their own traits? and Dan responds.

7 minutes and 45 seconds - Vacation e-leash - is it possible to go on holiday without a laptop? Last year Dan goes went to Hawaii and took his laptop and every day twice a day checked his emails. Do any of our listeners suffer from being e-tethered?

Nine minutes - Luckily, Dan is starting to learn to leave the laptop at home when he goes on vacation. The article goes on to highlight that the problem extends beyond the US
as 9 out of 10 UK workers worry about work when they are on holiday.
